“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” – Albert Einstein
The young writers of Suncity-37D donned the hats of seasoned journalists and presented their class newspaper to the Director, Ms. Guneet Ohri, and the Principal, Ms. Jayshree Patel. The students felt overjoyed on sharing the impeccable outcome of their Gr V Project Based Learning Activity.
The activity started with identifying the elements of a newspaper report followed by formation of project groups. The groups were given different topics related to the school, all integrated with the SDGs. The students designed their newspaper on the model of ‘Times NIE.’
The activity was a test of students’ consistency and dedication. After framing interview questions, the groups of journalists visited various sites to gather information from different sources. A photo-journalist accompanied the groups to catch the interaction with several teachers. Later, the groups sat together to prepare the first draft of their reports, turning questions and answers into paragraphs using formal language. Finally, the first drafts were reviewed by the English educator for any grammatical or structural errors. Each child contributed to the newspaper either through their writing or art for the creative corner demonstrating the use of Multiple Intelligences and 4Cs of 21st century skills – communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking.
As a reflection, students shared their learnings from the activity which ranged from basics of a newspaper report to profound life lessons such as “having patience and letting go of one’s own ideas.” On being asked about the next steps, the students responded that there should be a report for the activity. Director ma’am suggested that as that next level of the project, the students should work on a monthly digital newspaper for the school.
The activity ignited the students’ excitement towards a common goal and the exhilaration on completion of the project was insurmountable.
